Special Awareness Programme on “Light of Hope: Strengthening Student Mental Health and Emotional Strength

The Women Empowerment Cell and the Women Sexual Harassment Prevention Cell jointly organised a Special Awareness Programme on “Light of Hope: Strengthening Student Mental Health and Emotional Strength” on 26th September 2025 at 10:00 AM in Kuvempu Vedhike.

The Resource Person, Dr. Karthik J., Psychiatrist, District Mental Health Programme, Hassan, delivered a thought-provoking talk on different forms of depression, causes behind rising suicide cases, and the importance of early intervention. He encouraged students to open up, seek professional help, and build resilience. Dr. Devika, Psychiatrist, stressed the need to break the stigma around mental illness, while Mrs. Anitha guided students on the importance of valuing life. Dr. Tejaswini, Taluk Health Officer, highlighted the shocking fact that every hour one student dies by suicide in India, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and preventive measures. Mr. Narasimhappa Murthy also briefed about the Supreme Court’s decision to conduct nationwide student mental health surveys.

The programme began with an invocation by Ms. Bhavana, followed by a welcome address from Mrs. Kavitha J. N., Convenor, Women Sexual Harassment Prevention Cell. The session was anchored by Ms. Lekhana and Ms. Chandanasri, final-year B.Sc. students. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Mrs. Siddaraju. The presence of Dr. Nirupama M., Convenor, Women Empowerment Cell, and other dignitaries added significance to the occasion.

The event inspired students to value life, cultivate emotional strength, and support each other with hope and resilience.
