Experiential Learning in Sociology of Health: Visit to Government Ayurveda Hospital

The Department of Sociology organized an educational field visit to the Government Ayurvedic Hospital, Channarayapatna, on 16^th October 2026 at 11:30 a.m. for the fifth-semester B.A. students. The programme was organized to provide students with first-hand knowledge of traditional medical practices and to help them understand the role of healthcare institutions in society as part of their Sociology of Health curriculum.

A total of 10 students participated in the visit under the guidance of the Head of the Department, Dr. Praveen Kumar S. The field visit was designed to enhance students’ practical understanding of healthcare systems and connect sociological theories with the functioning of medical institutions. During the visit, Dr. Triveni introduced the students to the basic concepts and treatment methods of Ayurveda. She explained the significance of medicinal plants, herbal preparations, dietary practices, lifestyle management, and natural approaches to maintaining health. She also emphasized the importance of preventive healthcare and a holistic approach to physical and mental well-being.

The students learned about the hospital’s healthcare services and observed how traditional medical practices are implemented in a clinical setting. The visit provided an opportunity to understand the relationship between cultural beliefs, traditional knowledge, and healthcare-seeking behaviour.

The field visit was a valuable learning experience that strengthened students’ understanding of health and illness from a sociological perspective. It helped them appreciate the role of traditional medicine in society and recognize the importance of healthcare awareness, preventive practices, and community well-being. The programme successfully complemented classroom teaching by providing practical exposure to the concepts covered in the Sociology of Health paper.

Orientation Programme for I B.A. Students

 An Orientation Programme for I B.A. students was organized on 18th August 2026 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. The programme aimed to warmly welcome the newly admitted students and familiarize them with the college environment, academic system, and various support services available for their overall development.

The programme commenced with a prayer by Bhavani, I B.A. Niroosha M.R. served as the Master of Ceremonies. Dr. Praveen Kumar S. delivered the welcome address and warmly welcomed the students to the institution.

Dr. Nagaraja N.T. introduced the students to the academic structure, subjects, curriculum, and other important academic matters related to the B.A. programme. He also introduced the various committees and support mechanisms available in the college, explaining whom students could approach for guidance and assistance regarding their academic, personal, and other college-related concerns.

Dr. M.K. Manjunatha, Principal, delivered the presidential address and motivated the students to actively participate in academic and co-curricular activities and make effective use of the opportunities provided by the college.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ningiraju. The orientation programme was informative and helped the I B.A. students gain a better understanding of the college, its academic system, and the support services available to them.

Ayurveda in Action: Educational Field Visit to Government Ayurvedic Hospital

The Department of Sociology organized an educational field visit to the Government Ayurvedic Hospital, Channarayapatna, on 17.04.2026 for the final year B.A. students. This visit was conducted as a part of the Sociology of Health paper prescribed in the academic syllabus, with the objective of providing practical exposure to traditional healthcare systems and their relevance in contemporary society.

A total of 18 students actively participated in the field visit under the guidance of the Head of the Department, Dr. Praveen Kumar S., along with faculty member Mr. Ajay Kumar. The visit aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world practices in the field of health and medicine.

During the visit, Dr. Triveni explained the principles and practices of Ayurvedic medicine, highlighting the importance of natural healing, herbal remedies, balanced diet, and lifestyle in maintaining good health. She provided valuable insights into how Ayurveda focuses on holistic well-being and prevention of diseases.

In addition, Dr. Basira gave an informative session on Unani treatment, explaining its unique approach to diagnosis and healing based on the balance of bodily humors. The students gained a comparative understanding of different traditional systems of medicine and their continued relevance in modern healthcare.

The students also observed the functioning of various sections of the hospital and interacted with the medical staff, which helped them understand the practical aspects of healthcare delivery in traditional systems. The visit enhanced their knowledge of alternative medicine and its role in society, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.

This field visit proved to be highly informative and enriching, enabling students to relate sociological concepts of health, illness, and healthcare systems to real-life situations.

Special Lecture: International Women’s Day-2026

The Department of Sociology organized a special lecture on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 9, 2026, at 11:30 AM in Lecture Hall 201 at Sri Adichunchanagiri First Grade College, Channarayapatna. The program aimed to create awareness about women’s empowerment and the status of women in contemporary society.

The event began with an invocation song rendered by Prajwal B.R., a First-year B.A. student. This was followed by the welcome address delivered by Dr. Praveen Kumar S., Head of the Department of Sociology, who welcomed the dignitaries, faculty members, and students. As a symbolic gesture to mark the occasion, the dignitaries inaugurated the program by watering plants, symbolizing growth, sustainability, and empowerment.

The program was graced by Dr. Bharathi Nagesh, Secretary of Nagesh Shikshana Trust, as the Resource Person. The resource person was formally introduced to the gathering by Ms. Kavitha J.N., Librarian, who highlighted her contributions and achievements.

In her address, Dr. Bharathi Nagesh spoke about the importance of women’s empowerment and the status of women in society. She emphasized the need for students to develop both IQ (Intelligence Quotient) and EQ (Emotional Quotient) and highlighted the importance of maintaining balanced mental, physical, and social well-being. During her lecture, she presented statistical data on various social issues affecting women, including dowry harassment, rape cases, girl child harassment, and child marriage. She stressed that awareness, education, and legal literacy are essential to address these issues and improve the position of women in society. She also spoke about the misuse of mobile phones among students, explaining that excessive exposure to inappropriate and harmful content on the internet can negatively affect students’ lives and values. She advised students to use technology responsibly for learning, knowledge, and personal development.

The presidential address was delivered by Dr. M.K. Manjunatha, Principal of SAFG College, who emphasized the importance of gender equality, respect for women, and social responsibility. Dr. Nirupama M., Head of the Department of Zoology, also present on the dais, adding dignity to the occasion.

The program was anchored by Chandana M.D., a Second-year B.A. student, who conducted the event smoothly. The program concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Shekhimran, Assistant Professor, who expressed gratitude to the chief guest, principal, faculty members, and students for their presence and support. The session was informative and enlightening, highlighting the importance of awareness, education, and social responsibility in empowering women and addressing gender-related issues in society.
