The Department of Economics organized a field study visit to Chamundeshwari Sugar Industry, Srinivaspura, Channarayapatna, on 18th November 2025 with 24 students and 3 faculty members - Dr. Praveen Kumar S., Mr. Lokesh G.S., Vishwanath. The purpose of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to the functioning of agro-based industries and to understand their economic relevance in the regional market.
During the visit, Mr. Ramesh, an employee of the factory, explained that the industry processes about 3 to 4 lakh tonnes of sugarcane per year and supplies sugar mainly to Kerala and Bengaluru. He informed that the factory uses Hemavathi River water for its operations and employs around 600 to 650 workers working in three shifts. He also highlighted that the industry recycles sugarcane by-products, ensuring efficient resource utilization and reducing wastage.
Students observed various stages of sugar production, including crushing, juice extraction, boiling, crystallization, and packaging. The visit enabled them to understand labour distribution, cost structure, market linkages, and industrial management practices. Overall, the field study helped students learn the economic importance of the sugar industry and its contribution to local and regional economic development.
Students tasted the sugar and learned the complete process of converting sugarcane into sugar.
